Dean, Shintaro Akatsu School of Design.
I am an educator and administrator with 35 years of demonstrated leadership and administrative experience in art and design-focused higher education. My love of art, craft, and design began long ago; I have been a creator, maker, and builder from as far back as I can recall. I vividly remember sitting on the floor of my grandfather’s shop as a seven-year-old, attempting to build my next creation: wire, pieces of wood, springs, glue, hammer and nails in front of me. I asked him if I could use a chisel and, much to my surprise, he said “No”. Bewildered, I asked him why not and he answered, “Because you don’t know how to sharpen a chisel”. On that day my grandfather skillfully taught me how to sharpen a chisel to a razor’s edge with mirrored finish and I was hooked; I learned how a keen edge looked, felt, and sounded as it cleaved pine (the aroma was amazing). Only much later did I realize that what I had actually learned that day was the true value of teaching and learning—a lesson I will never forget. Today, inspiration surrounds me; faculty, staff, and students enrich my life daily. The hallways, classrooms and studios have ever changing activities; student work displayed from every discipline, works in progress, and finished works—each demonstrating promise to inspire, inform, solve, and serve. As a leader and administrator, I am passionate about, and successful in meeting challenges and optimizing opportunities for design to make a difference. I remain a creator, maker, and builder; the difference now is that my professional efforts are focused on creating opportunities and envisioning alignments, making connections and alliances, fostering internship and career opportunities for students and building transformational learning experiences.
